Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Rare Blades Guide

Rare Blades are optional fighters you collect beyond the story-mandatory roster. Some arrive from a Core Crystal pull, others from multi-step quests, shop purchases, or hidden boss defeats. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 never puts every method in one menu, so this guide lists unlock routes and practical farming order.

If you are hunting a specific Blade, check the method first—pulling Legendary crystals for a Quest Blade wastes hours. For crystal-only Blades, stack Luck and read Core Crystals before burning your entire stock.

Story Blades vs Rare Blades

Story Blades join automatically: Pyra, Mythra, Dromarch, Poppi α, Poppi β, Brighid, Pandoria, Roc, and Aegaeon (via quest). You cannot miss them on a normal playthrough.

Rare Blades are everything else in the Blade Album—roughly three dozen optional characters with four-star designs, unique Blade Arts, and field skills. They use the same affinity and Driver systems as story Blades, but acquisition varies wildly.

How to get all rare blades

Core Crystal pulls

Most Rare Blades come from bonding Drivers with Common, Rare, or Legendary Core Crystals. The game rolls a hidden table modified by your Idea Points (community, Justice, Truth, Compassion, etc.) and your Luck stat.

Common crystals drop from early enemies and tutorial zones. They mostly yield Common Blades, but Rare Blades can appear at low rates.

Rare crystals appear from mid-game enemies, treasure, and shops. Better odds, still RNG-heavy.

Legendary crystals are the endgame pull currency. Farm them from Driver Combos on high-level enemies—especially Relentless Arduran and Reeking Douglas—and from Challenge Mode rewards. Legendary pulls are how most players finish the Album.

Use Rex or a dedicated Luck Driver when hunting specific elements. Idea tables bias pulls toward Blades matching your highest Idea categories. If you keep pulling Water Blades while hunting Zenobia, check whether your Justice or Compassion Ideas skew the pool.

Track who you already own on the Blade Checklist so you do not duplicate efforts across Drivers.

Quest and event unlocks

Several powerful Blades never appear in crystals. You must complete chains:

KOS-MOS — Longest hunt in the game. Requires max affinity on multiple Blade categories, specific enemy kills, and endgame area access. Start early by filling affinity charts; finish after Chapter 8.

Sheba — Requires spending millions of Gold through her Blade mechanic before she fully joins. Pair with Gold-farming routes and pouch items she likes.

Vess — Church quest line in Gormott. Upgrade her stat growth with items instead of typical affinity alone.

Aegaeon — Mandatory side quest for Nia’s Driver form, not a random pull.

Azami, Gorg, Finch, and others — Each has a unique quest or dialogue chain. When a pull fails repeatedly, verify the Blade is not quest-locked.

Shop and DLC Blades

Some Blades sell directly:

Nia DLC Blade (if owned) — Available through DLC menus; not part of base Album completion for purists but strong in combat.

T-elos — New Game Plus or Challenge reward depending on version; check your edition.

Shiny locked Blades in shops rotate by progression. Always skim every new settlement vendor after story beats.

Hidden bosses and secret encounters

A few Blades require defeating optional enemies:

Cloud Sea King Ken and other super-bosses gate loot that indirectly supports Blade hunting (crystals, accessories), while some quest Blades spawn only after specific UM enemies die a set number of times.

Devilish Beast style encounters in Temperantia and Spirit Crucible Elpys unlock quest stages. If a Rare Blade quest stalls, search the area for a missing UM fight.

Notable Rare Blades by role

These appear often in Tier List discussions:

Zenobia — Dark attacker with high burst; popular for Challenge Mode if affinity is invested.

Herald — Electric glass cannon; fragile but explosive when Driver Combos are mastered.

Vale — Wind support with strong team buffs; excellent in coordinated endgame parties.

KOS-MOS — Light attacker with top-tier damage potential once unlocked and leveled.

Patroka / Akhos — Torna members with unique kits; strong but narrative-locked until late game.

Adenine, Godfrey, Azami — Field skill specialists. Weak fighters, mandatory explorers.

Recommended hunting order

1. Play the story until Chapter 4 without heavy farming. Unlock Drivers and free Blades first.
2. Fill story Blade affinity to raise Idea Points naturally.
3. Pull Rare crystals on Rex for general variety while element gaps exist.
4. Start quest Blades that take real-world time (KOS-MOS, Sheba) in parallel with main quests.
5. Farm Legendary crystals after Driver Combos and Luck accessories come online.
6. Use Overdrive accessories to move Blades between Drivers for optimal field skill coverage.

RNG tips that actually help

• Save before Legendary bond sessions if your version allows soft-resetting.
• Bond with different Drivers—some Blades are Driver-exclusive until Overdrive.
• Raise Luck on whoever holds your Luck Blade (often a dedicated Rex or Tora build).
• Complete Blade Affinity Charts to increase Idea bonuses tied to categories.
• Finish Challenge Mode battles for crystals before marathon pull sessions.
