Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Starter Party Build

A reliable first-playthrough trio with story Blades and simple Driver Combos.

Last updated:

Your first party in Xenoblade Chronicles 2 sets habits that stick for dozens of hours. This starter build uses Rex, Nia, and Tora with story Blades you receive for free—no Rare Blade hunting, no optimized accessories, no Poppi QTπ required. It aims for consistent Driver Combos, survivable boss fights, and element coverage through the mid-game (roughly Chapters 1–7).

Once you outgrow it, pivot to Endgame Builds and Poppi Build Guide. Until then, master fundamentals from the Combat Guide instead of chasing Tier List rares early.

Core trio: Rex, Nia, Tora

These three Drivers join naturally and cover attacker, healer, and tech roles.

Rex — Main damage dealer. Bonds with Pyra, Mythra, Roc, and most Rare Blades thanks to Master Driver affinity later. Keep him on-field for most story bosses.

Nia — Primary healer with Dromarch. Her Driver Arts heal and buff; swap to her when party HP drops during long fights.

Tora — Runs Poppi α and Poppi β. Essential for Driver Combos Tora can Break/Topple with artificial Blades while Rex finishes Launch/Smash.

Avoid benching Tora because Poppi looks weaker than Pyra—combo stage coverage matters more than raw tooltip damage in early chapters.

Rex

Pyra — Fire damage and Smash finisher. Use for burst phases and Fire weak points.

Mythra — Light damage and speed after she joins in Chapter 4. Switch to Mythra for faster Blade Switch and Art cycling on non-Fire enemies.

Roc — Wind coverage when Mythra/Pyra share elements poorly against a boss. Free from story progression.

Optional fourth slot: first useful Rare Blade you pull (often a missing element). Track pulls on the Blade Checklist.

Nia

Dromarch — Water Healer and combo support. Keeps party alive during tutorial-heavy chapters.

Aegaeon — Unlock via side quest when available; adds tanky Water option for aggro-heavy fights.

Leave Nia’s third slot for a Rare Blade with field skills if combat Blades lag.

Tora

Poppi α — Default tanky Poppi; good Break starter with proper role boards (basic setups suffice early).

Poppi β — Secondary Poppi for extra Art variety; upgrade through Tora’s quest line.

Do not worry about QT or QTπ yet—those arrive later. Basic Poppi still supplies Earth/Fire/Lightning coverage with simple crystals if you invest manuals gradually.

Driver Combo flow for beginners

Most early enemies weak to a simple chain:

  1. Break — Often Poppi or Nia Driver Art.
  2. Topple — Follow with Rex or Tora Blade Art matching element.
  3. Launch — Rex Pyra/Mythra or party Driver Art.
  4. Smash — Pyra finisher for big damage and loot bursts later.

If a stage fails, you usually lack the element for that step—not levels. Check enemy weak points in the menu and swap Blades before grinding XP.

Full charts live on the Combat Guide. Practice on normal UM enemies before story bosses to learn timing without checkpoint pressure.

Battle rhythm tips

Switch Drivers often — Each Driver recharges Arts independently. Weave Rex damage with Nia heals and Tora combo setup.

Build party meter — Full bar enables Chain Attacks. Save for boss phases or when you need guaranteed Break.

Use Blade Switch — Swap to Mythra for speed, Pyra for Smash, Dromarch for emergency heals mid-combo.

Target the right enemy — Multi-enemy fights need focused Break on one target; spreading combos fails.

Do not ignore Tora’s Driver Arts — Poppibuster and similar skills scale with eventual Poppi investment.

Affinity and Trust priorities

Limited pouch items mean smart targeting:

  1. Pyra and Mythra — Rex’s main DPS; Trust unlocks stronger Arts.
  2. Dromarch — Healing power scales with affinity.
  3. Poppi α/β — Feed Tora’s favorites; Poppi charts split per form on Affinity Charts.

Heart-to-Hearts boost Trust fast—grab icons on the map per the Trust Guide. Story scenes between Rex, Pyra, and Mythra also matter; do not rush chapters while icons remain in old zones. See the Walkthrough for chapter order.

Accessories and chips (low investment)

Early shops sell simple accessories. Prioritize:

HP and Healing on Nia — Fewer deaths mean fewer retry loops.

Agility or Evasion on Rex — Dodge telegraphed boss hits while learning patterns.

Block Rate on Tora/Poppi — Hold aggro while Rex DPSes.

Skip complex Luck farming until post-game Core Crystals. Starter build ignores Legendary crystal optimization entirely.

Core Chips on Poppi can wait until Tora’s upgrade quests introduce meaningful boards. Avoid spending rare materials on temporary Blades you will bench.

When to pull Rare Blades

Use Rare Core Crystals opportunistically—not marathon sessions—during story play. Pull when:

  • You lack an entire element for combos.
  • A quest demands a field skill your roster misses.
  • You have spare crystals from normal play, not dedicated farming.

Consult Rare Blades for quest-only fighters you should not roll for (KOS-MOS, Sheba, etc.).

Common starter mistakes

Over-leveling Rex only — Under-leveled Nia and Tora die instantly on later bosses.

Skipping Driver Combos — Button mashing wastes the game’s biggest damage multiplier.

Ignoring field skills — Gates block progression; send Merc Missions on skill Blades from Blades Hub.

Replacing Poppi with a shiny Rare Blade — Lose combo flexibility until Poppi QT arrives.

Rushing past Heart-to-Hearts — Free Trust and lore; also gates some Blade quests.

Transitioning out of starter build

Upgrade paths around Chapter 7–8:

  • Swap to Mythra-primary Rex for speed.
  • Unlock Poppi QT via Tora quests.
  • Add first Luck accessories before crystal farming.
  • Read Endgame Builds when Challenge Mode opens.

The starter party remains viable through the finale—changes are optimization, not necessity. Players who master Driver Combos early finish story bosses faster than players with random S-tier Tier List pulls and no combo discipline.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Is Rex the best Driver for the whole story?

Rex is the easiest main DPS thanks to Pyra and Mythra, but Nia and Tora are required for healing and combos. Level all three Drivers evenly through mid-game.

When should I start using Mythra over Pyra?

After Chapter 4 when Mythra joins, use her for faster combat and Blade Switch. Keep Pyra for Fire weak points and Smash finishers.

Do I need Rare Blades for this starter build?

No. Story Blades cover the main quest. Rare Blades fill elemental gaps and field skills but are optional until post-game optimization.

Why keep Tora if Poppi deals less damage?

Poppi supplies Break and Topple stages other Blades miss early. Driver Combos multiply damage more than raw Art numbers on one Blade.

What is the first upgrade after this build?

Invest affinity in Rex's Blades, unlock Poppi QT through Tora's quests, then read the Endgame Builds guide when Challenge Mode becomes available.
